Sport Northland Board - Intern positions

 Intern Sport Northland Board Position

Sport Northland is seeking applications from people wishing to be considered for an Intern Board position with the Sport Northland board.

Sport Northland, one of 14 Regional Sports Trusts nationwide, is a registered charitable trust with a core purpose ‘to enrich Northlander’s lives by inspiring and enabling more movement’. The Trust provides services and activities in play, active recreation and sport settings. We also own and manage McKay Stadium, Kensington Fitness and the Northland Sports House, and also own the Whangarei Aquatic Centre, the Bay of Islands Recreation Centre and the Kauri Coast Community Pool.

The Trust employs over 80 people (55 FTEs), turns over in excess of $8.6m and has total assets of more than $38m.

The Sport Northland Board is purely governance focussed, and in 2023, for the second time, received recognition from Sport NZ through the awarding of Governance Mark for its sector-leading systems and processes in governance. The eight board meetings annually are less than three hours in duration and held on a Monday night. There is also a number of other commitments across the year, such as board sub-committee meetings, Te Tiriti training sessions and the AGM in November.

In 2021 the AGM voted to establish a new board structure which has enabled the board to reach their bi-cultural goal of having 50% Māori representation on the board. In recent months, after a 12-month trial, the board also made the decision to appoint permanent co-chairs to lead the board – both a Tangata Whenua chair and a Tangata Tiriti chair.

The board holds eight Board meetings per year, which are normally held on the first Monday night of the month. There is also a number of other commitments across the year, such as board sub-committee meetings, Te Tiriti training sessions and the AGM in November.

The successful Intern will be paired with a mentor (one of the other board members) and an existing Intern, who will both offer further support and information on how the board works.

The term of appointment as an Intern is for 12 months (the 2025 calendar year).

We are looking for Northlanders who would like to gain knowledge of sports governance so that they can take what they learn to other Northland sports boards.

IDEAL APPLICANT DESCRIPTION

The Board welcomes applications from people of all ages, backgrounds and from anywhere in Tai Tokerau.

The applicant should ideally have the majority of the following:

  • A passion for on-going governance learning
  • A strong understanding and commitment to Te Ao Māori
  • Strategic thinking ability/skills
  • Some financial and sport/recreation knowledge
  • The ability to fit into a ‘governance team’ that focusses more on ‘creating the future’ than ‘minding the shop’
