DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

Working together to ensure equitable opportunities for all Northlanders to get active

Our Commitment

The three terms Diversity, Equity & Inclusion group together to help ensure diverse groups of individuals are provided with the support they need to access and enjoy physical activity, despite barriers they may face. Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in play, active recreation, and sport - regardless of age, gender, ability, cultural or religious background, or sexual orientation.

Sport Northland is on a continuous learning journey to improve opportunities, sector capability and offerings in order to ensure all members of the Te Tai Tokerau community have access to participate in sport and active recreation, no matter what.

COLLABORATION: SPORT NORTHLAND & RESPORT CHARITABLE TRUST

We are proud to promote the "Positive Participation through Puberty" initiative, a collaboration which aims to empower Northland’s youth by promoting confidence, comfort, and participation during their adolescent years.

Recognising the unique challenges faced by young people during puberty, ReSport and Sport Northland are committed to ensuring that every young person has access to appropriate sportswear while reiterating the availability of period products in schools and kura through the Ministry of Education’s Ikura | Manaakitia te whare tangata programme, which currently provides products for 82% of schools and kura in Northland.

As part of this initiative, our campaign to collect sports bras and active wear aims to reduce barriers and support adolescents in Northland to participate in sports and recreational activities with confidence and enthusiasm.

Inclusive Access at Sport Northland Facilities

Kensington Fitness: The ground floor and gym floor (top floor) both have one disability toilet, unisex toilets, and elevator access.

Kensington Fitness currently has male and female only changing facilities - there are individual shower cubicles inside, and you are welcome to use the facilities that best affirm your gender. We are in the process of looking at ways to have more inclusive facilities.

McKay Stadium: There is a unisex disability toilet by the courts and upstairs by the cafe. For elevator access, please speak to reception.

CDL Northland Sports House: Sport Northland's offices have a unisex disability toilet by the kitchen, and elevator access.

Kauri Coast Community Pool: Unisex disability & family changing rooms are available with a shower and toilet. There are built-in ramps to enter both competition and hydrotherapy pools.

Whangarei Aquatic Centre: Unisex family changing rooms with showers are available, as well as one unisex disability changing room with a shower and toilet. The building is accessible, with a hoist for pool access.

Bay of Islands Recreation Centre: There is a unisex disability/family changing room with a shower and toilet. The building is accessible, with ramps and a hoist for pool access.
