Promoting water safety and education

Top Energy WaterSafe and Northland WaterSafe Programme

The Top Energy Watersafe programme (Far North district) and Northland WaterSafe programme (Whangarei and Kaipara districts), prioritise water survival and getting kids to love the water. It is based on Water Skills for Life™, developed by Water Safety New Zealand and ACC on behalf of the wider New Zealand water safety community to lift the water survival competence of Kiwi kids. The water survival life skills and knowledge taught here helps prepare kids to survive and thrive at the pool, beach, river or lake.  Being safe and comfortable in the water makes it easier for all kids to go on and learn how to swim, dive for kai or enjoy the surf.

Thanks to the following funders for these programmes: Top Energy Ltd, Te Whatu Ora, Water Safety New Zealand and Oxford Sports Trust. Without their support, we could not do this important work to support kids to be safer in and around the water.

The successful award-winning Top Energy WaterSafe programme has been running in the Far and Mid North since 1997 due to the fantastic and longtime support from Top Energy Ltd. Thanks to partnerships the programmes are offered FREE to all Northland primary and intermediate schools..

The aim of the Top Energy WaterSafe and Northland WaterSafe programmes is to raise the water safety and swim to survive skills of primary and intermediate aged children and provide teachers with the confidence to deliver these skills through comprehensive programmes.  Outcome goal, to achieve zero preventable drownings and reduce the number of hospitalisations due to near drownings in Northland, though embedding water safety skills as a life skill to our tamariki.

These FREE programmes are available for Year 1 to Year 8 school children in Northland. Click here for more details.
