Kaingaroa School is a shining example of how play is valued and easily incorporated into various aspects of their educational environment. Through their approaches and whānau inclusive events, they have created opportunities for students to engage in risky play, connect with nature, build confidence, and foster a sense of community pride.
There are many examples of the way Kaingaroa School values play and active movement including the success of the PAL (Physical Activity Leaders) event they hosted for local Early Childhood Centres which then led to the planning of Tabloids Day. An in-school Athletics Day was a super cool occasion where senior students engaged in a thrilling relay race against the teachers and won. This event served as a celebration for the students before their transition to college, further highlighting the school's emphasis on play and camaraderie.
Kaingaroa School understands the immense value of play, evident not only in their physical playground but also in their strategic planning. Their Facebook page and school environment showcase how play contributes significantly to the students' confidence and active participation within the school community. Building on this success, the school is now seeking ways to extend this confidence to their students when they engage in community activities and events.
They have an awesome climbing tree, with painted areas on the branches that offer varying levels of difficulty, this unique feature encourages risky play and decision making while keeping them connected to nature. They also have play on the way stencils all around the school, mud kitchens, a fishpond and much more!
Furthermore, the school places a strong emphasis on functional movement, demonstrated through the Senior class delivering a fitness programme to the entire school. This daily fitness class, organised by senior students, has become a resounding success. Every morning at 9:45am, students from all classes come together to participate in circuits, obstacle courses, sports games, jump jam, and other engaging activities. This consistent routine, organised on a timetable, ensures that all classes are involved, contributing to the holistic wellbeing of the students. The positive impact of this programme was evident when the juniors independently set up obstacle courses on a scheduled day off, showcasing sustainability and the influence of the Tuakana/Teina model.
Kaingaroa School continues to showcase the many examples that prove their ongoing commitment to movement by incorporating it into various aspects of their educational practices. From their adventurous climbing tree to their community/whānau days, amazing gardens, Winter Gala Day, PAL, fitness classes, Tabloids Day, Weetbix Tryathlon and most recently – Matariki crop swap, the school instils a sense of confidence, belonging, and pride in their students while fostering meaningful connections within the school and community.
